When you are buying something as simple and natural as dried herbs, it is easy to assume that "natural", "organic" and "certified organic" all mean roughly the same thing. They don't.

At The Tea Hut, we stock a very large range of herbs, and wherever a product is sold as Certified Organic, we want customers to be able to understand what that actually means and why certification is important.

What Does Certified Organic Actually Mean?

Certified organic is different from simply describing a product as organic.

Organic certification involves an independent certification body checking that the business and products meet recognised organic requirements.

The Tea Hut is certified by Southern Cross Certified Australia (SXC), and we undergo an auditing process to maintain our certification.

Our certification number is SXC #24179.

This means there is an independent system behind the certified organic products we sell rather than us simply making an organic claim ourselves.

It's About More Than How the Herb Is Grown

Most people naturally think of organic certification in terms of farming — particularly avoiding certain synthetic pesticides, herbicides and fertilisers.

That is certainly part of the picture, but certification also involves what happens to the product after harvesting.

For businesses handling certified organic products, maintaining organic integrity involves things such as proper identification, storage, handling, record keeping and traceability.

That is particularly important for a business like ours because we handle such a large variety of teas and herbs.

We need to know what a product is, where it has come from and ensure certified organic products continue to be handled appropriately once they arrive with us.

There are hundreds of herbs available from growers and suppliers around the world. Some are very common, while others can be quite difficult to source.

Certified Organic Doesn't Mean Every Product We Sell Is Organic

This is something we think is important to be clear about.

The Tea Hut range includes Certified Organic, conventional and wildcrafted teas and herbs.

We don't try to disguise that.

If a product is Certified Organic, we identify it clearly as such on the website.

There are also some herbs where a reliable certified organic supply simply isn't available, or where a good-quality conventional or wildcrafted option makes more sense.

Rather than limiting the range unnecessarily, we prefer to clearly identify what customers are buying and let them make their own choice.

If Certified Organic is particularly important to you, simply look for "Certified Organic" in the product name and description.

Why Traceability Matters With Herbs

Herbs can travel a surprisingly long way before reaching your teacup.

They may be grown in Europe, Asia, Africa, South America or Australia, harvested, dried, packed and then transported through several stages before reaching us.

Having appropriate records and traceability matters.

It is one of the less glamorous parts of selling tea and herbs, but it is one of the most important.

Customers generally only see the finished pouch that arrives at their door.

Behind that pouch is sourcing, supplier documentation, incoming stock checks, storage, packing and inventory control.

Organic certification adds another level of accountability to that process.

Does Certified Organic Mean Better Tasting?

Not necessarily.

Taste is incredibly subjective.

Growing region, soil, climate, harvest time, processing and freshness can all affect how a herb tastes.

We've worked with wonderful certified organic herbs and wonderful conventionally grown herbs.

For us, organic certification isn't primarily about claiming that one herb will automatically taste better than another.

It's about giving customers confidence in how the certified organic product has been produced and handled.

That is a much more meaningful distinction.

Natural Herbs Won't Always Look Identical

This is another thing worth mentioning.

If you order the same herb six months apart and notice that the new batch is slightly greener, darker, finer or more aromatic, that doesn't necessarily mean anything is wrong.

Plants change.

Different harvests experience different rainfall, temperatures and growing conditions.

Some batches contain larger leaves. Others may be more finely cut. Flowers can vary considerably in colour.

That is simply part of buying genuine agricultural products rather than something manufactured to look identical every time.

We always aim for consistency and quality, but we also think customers should expect a certain amount of natural variation.
